Geomagnetic Polarity Transition Records from ODP Cores

November 7-8, 1994 – Miami, Florida
Convener: Bradford Clement

Summary
A number of exciting paleomagnetic results have been obtained recently that provide important clues to the workings of the geodynamo.  These results include the interpretation that the lowermost mantle influences the geomagnetic field during polarity reversals, and the demonstration that globally correlative records of relative paleointensity may be obtained from deep-sea sediments.  Globally distributed paleomagnetic records of reversals and paleosecular variation are required to test these results, and therefore deep sea sediments cored by the Ocean Drilling Program are critical to address these issues.
