Workshop – 21st Century Drilling

Date: February 24-28, 2025

Location: Gulf Coast Repository, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, USA

Workshop Organizers:  Beth Christensen (Rowan University) and Laurel Childress (Texas A&M University). Instructors are also anticipated to include Anna-Joy Drury (University of Leicester), Gerald Auer (University of Graz), and David de Vleeschouwer (University of Münster).

Without a drill ship, the U.S. scientific community is challenged to answer new scientific questions using existing material. Most significantly, until we have additional options, legacy material will be the primary source of data for answering new scientific questions in deep time.

However, there are challenges with working from existing material and this workshop aims to train early to mid-career faculty who will seek to write proposals using legacy materials. The workshop will include fundamentals of curation, core description, and physical properties measurements, and in doing so will highlight how new science can evolve from revisiting existing core. We will also introduce the participants to potential pitfalls and solutions for working with legacy material.

The workshop is designed to:

  1. Broaden participation and knowledge of the early and mid-career scientific ocean drilling community;
  2. Teach fundamentals of working with legacy core materials; and
  3. Prepare participants to develop legacy core research proposals.

The workshop will be held at the Gulf Coast Repository, Texas A&M University, in College Station, TX, USA. Participants are expected to arrive in College Station on February 23, 2025 (Sunday). The workshop will begin at 8am on February 24, 2025 and conclude at 5pm on February 28, 2025.

We intend to invite a broad range of participants, with a focus on early- and mid-career scientists who are interested in developing proposals to use legacy materials and data.

The application form can be found here. The deadline to apply will be December 19, 2024 and invitations to participate will be sent by late December. Applications will be used to guide participant selection.

Travel support is available from the U.S. Science Support Program (USSSP) for U.S.-based participants. International applicants should contact their program member offices and/or workshop organizer Beth Christensen.
